Backend Engineer for Global Expansion, focusing on payment acquirer integration and AI tooling.
- •The Global Expansion Acquiring Squad is responsible for SumUp's growth into new markets, integrating local payment acquirers and enabling merchant onboarding.
- •This role involves owning critical backend systems and shaping squad processes through AI agents and developer tooling.
- •Key Responsibilities Design and build scalable backend services in Golang and Kotlin for merchant onboarding, transaction processing, and reconciliation.
- •Lead technical investigations for new market launches and mentor engineers.
- •Configure and maintain AI coding assistants with team-specific rules and patterns.
- •Build AI agents to automate repetitive development tasks.
- •Keep documentation accurate and AI-accessible.
- •Requirements Strong proficiency in Golang (primary) or a JVM language (Java, Kotlin) with experience in distributed, fault-tolerant backend systems.
- •Experience configuring AI coding assistants at a team level.
- •Solid understanding of idempotency, retry policies, and transaction safety in financial systems.
- •Comfort working across multiple teams and navigating ambiguity.
- •Track record of taking ownership in complex, cross-functional environments.
